Throughout the school day on January 26, the Nazareth Area High School Library Advisory Board hosted its 2nd Annual Mario Kart Tournament in the library.
The 32 participants were organized into a bracket-style tournament, which progressed throughout the day. The last four students remaining participated in the finals, and after an intense final game, the winners were declared. Soham Patel, grade 11, took first place, while Kaleb Fulmer, grade 10, was second, and Julian Krause, grade 11, filled the third place position. The winners received prizes such as candy, Java Joint gift certificates, t-shirts, and Visa or GameStop gift cards.
Thanks to State Farm Agent Brian Witmer’s generous sponsorship, the Java Joint provided free hot beverages throughout the day. Witmer paid for the supplies and donated $150 to the library so that the drinks could be provided free to students. Additionally, the player registration fees earned the library an additional $160. The proceeds go towards the Library Advisory Board and will be used to fund their club field trip to Washington, D.C. later this year, as well as the Spring Reading Challenge, Reading Olympics, and Makerspace materials.
Nazareth Area High School Librarian Mrs. Sarah Strouse, coordinator of the event, believes that “As with anything, the second time doing it was more successful. Everyone had fun, and that’s what matters, and it got students in the library that normally don’t go there.”
Strouse says the tournament will return next year.
